What do you do when you're cruising along, minding your own business, and you pass the historic Greyhound Bus Station with those two bay doors wide open—only to spot a bar inside? Well, obviously, you pull over to see what's going on, right? I mean, come on, it's practically calling you! Right? Right!

We walked inside and discovered that the old bus station had been transformed into a charming restaurant called Doe’s Eat Place. It even has a bar area featuring two enormous retractable garage doors—because why settle for ordinary when you can have a “fun, unique open-air experience” when the weather’s nice? We were warmly greeted by the manager, Seth Wilson, who was more than happy to chat with us about the restaurant's history and the exciting transformation.

Doe’s Eat Place was founded in 1941 by Dominick “Doe” Signa and his wife Mamie—because who wouldn’t want to create a legendary restaurant with a name like “Doe”? Fast forward to 1974, when “Doe” retired, passing the torch to the next generation of Signas to keep the family tradition alive. The original Doe’s Eat Place is located in Greenville, MS, at 502 Nelson St. (P.S. if you're in the area, their hours are Monday – Saturday, 5pm – 9pm, and you can reach them at 662-334-3315).
There are now a few other “family-owned” Doe’s Eat Place locations (because everyone deserves a taste), with one in Paducah, KY, at 136 Broadway St. This one is open Monday – Thursday from 11am – 9pm, Friday – Saturday from 11am – 10pm, and Sunday from 12pm – 9pm (270-443-9006).
And of course, there’s the one we visited, located at 407 E. Main St. in Jackson, TN. Their hours are Monday from 4pm – 10pm, Tuesday – Thursday from 11am – 9pm, and Friday – Saturday from 11am – 10pm (731-265-6772).
Through the years, the legacy of Doe’s Eat Place has remained strong, with the Jackson location continuing the same commitment to high-quality food and that warm Southern hospitality that made the original spot famous. If you're in the area, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place to eat and enjoy a true family legacy!
Since this restaurant originally started in Greenville, I had to call my aunt to find out if she’d ever been to the original Doe’s Eat Place. Spoiler alert: the answer was a resounding yes! She told me that when she and her siblings were kids, they’d visit the restaurant for the famous hot tamales—and the owners would just give them away for free. Ah, the good ol' days when free tamales were the norm! Don’t try that today in this economy, though—and hey, it is a business after all!
Unfortunately, by the time we stumbled upon Doe’s Eat Place, we had already indulged in lunch—oops! So, we didn’t get to dive into their famous offerings just yet. But don’t worry, we’ve got big plans to gather the entire Snacks and Suitcases Crew for a part 2 of this blog. Mark your calendars, because we’ll be back for more!
But I can tell you this much from what we've heard: the food is top-notch, especially those “world famous” steaks. And it’s not just steaks on the menu; they also serve pasta, seafood, burgers, and plenty more. Oh, and a little nugget of knowledge for you—those tamales? They’re made in-house! That’s right, fresh and delicious, just like they’ve been since the good ol’ days. Stay tuned for round two!
Let’s get back to those legendary steaks… As of right now, all we can do is quote the website, because, well, we haven’t tasted them yet (but don’t worry, we’ll be back!). Here’s what they have to say: “Our reputation has always been built on excellent steaks & the freshest ingredients. From the beginning, we have separated ourselves from the average steakhouse by cutting all our own Sirloins, T-Bones, Filet Mignons, Bone-In Strips, & Ribeyes. Our oversized steaks are designed for sharing family-style, & we believe this and everything we do will make your dining experience special.”
Now, while we didn’t get to sink our teeth into those glorious cuts just yet, we couldn’t leave without at least trying something. So, off we went to the bar! This is a full-service bar, meaning you can order menu choices directly from the restaurant (because who doesn’t want nimble and a cocktail?). It’s got big-screen TVs, and there’s often live music to keep the vibe lively. What we really loved, though, was the fact that the garage doors were open, letting in some fresh air and making the place feel even more inviting. And let’s not forget, the whole space—and the staff—were incredibly welcoming! We parked ourselves at the bar, chatted with the bartender, and asked her to whip us up something special. Stay tuned for our future steak adventures… we’ll be back! These were refreshing by the way.

To reserve a table or not to reserve a table—that is the question. And, well, we really wanted to try the food, so we went back on Valentine’s Day. Yes, we did. Without a reservation. We know, we know—don’t judge us! But, of course, as fate would have it, they were packed! When we visited a few days earlier for lunch, there were tables available, but when it comes to the "special occasion" times at a restaurant, it’s probably best to call ahead to see if a reservation is needed. Lesson learned! Next time, we’ll be the ones with the reservation—and a belly full of steak!
