If your ideal road trip includes places that are hidden gems, cozy cafés, locally sourced food, handcrafted herbal drinks, and meeting genuinely good people along the way, then it’s time to point your car toward the charming town of Somerville, Tennessee. Just 45 minutes outside of Memphis, tucked inside Somerville in beautiful Fayette County, sits a little café with a big heart: A New Life Herbs Coffee & Café. And trust me — this isn’t your average coffee stop.
Founded in September 2019 by the incredibly kind and welcoming Emily Giles, this café is fast becoming a gathering place centered around community, wellness, ethical business practices, and supporting local agriculture. The moment you walk through the doors, you can feel that everything here is intentional — from the ingredients in your drink to the relationships built with local farmers and small businesses.
Farm-to-Table Done Right

One thing that immediately makes A New Life Herbs stand out? It’s the only farm-to-table establishment in Fayette County. Yep. The chicken and pork served here are actually raised on Emily’s own farm. Produce is sourced from local farmers whenever possible, and even the bread and deli meats come from the Mennonite-owned Backerman’s Country Market. In a world full of processed convenience, this café is refreshingly real. The menu features delicious homemade foods, fresh herbal beverages, locally roasted coffee, and house-made syrups crafted with actual ingredients you can pronounce. No mystery flavors here — just honest, flavorful goodness. And if you’ve never tried kombucha before, this is the place to start. Their kombucha is packed with probiotics and digestive enzymes, making it both tasty and gut-friendly.
More Than a Coffee Shop

Sure, the coffee is amazing. But A New Life Herbs is also deeply rooted in herbal health, education, and community connection. They offer a variety of classes throughout the month that bring people together to learn, create, and grow. Whether you’re interested in herbal wellness, yoga, painting, or even homemade cleaners, there’s probably a class with your name on it.
Here are just a few favorites:
Tahnyana’s Yoga classes every Tuesday morning
Weekly herb education classes where guests learn about medicinal herbs through cooking, tasting, harvesting, and hands-on activities
Paint nights with local artist Kelly Bowen
Herbal basics classes for beginners
Bible study gatherings every Friday morning (at the café or on Facebook live)
“Sips & Suds” homemade cleaner workshops complete with kombucha and refreshments
Just go to the website and register for these amazing classes. Honestly, it feels less like a business and more like a community living room where everyone is welcome.
The Somerville Farmers Market Is Bringing the Community Together
As if the café itself wasn’t already impressive enough, Emily expanded her vision even further by launching the Somerville Farmers Market on May 31, 2025. Located directly behind A New Life Herbs Coffee & Café, the market has quickly become a vibrant gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
Picture this:
Local farmers selling fresh produce
Handmade goods from local artisans
Food trucks serving up delicious eats
Live music filling the air
Kids crafting bird feeders and other fun projects
A dedicated play area for children
And of course, A New Life Herb’s Coffee & Café is open during this time
It’s the kind of small-town magic that feels harder and harder to find these days.

The next market will be May 30, 2026, and then continues every Saturday from 8am–1pm. And this market’s kids craft? Bird feeders — which honestly feels perfectly on-brand for a community rooted in nature and togetherness. Growing More Than Food: A Community Garden

Another beautiful project growing behind the scenes is the community garden initiative. The goal is simple yet powerful: work alongside neighbors, share knowledge, and enjoy the harvest together. It’s not just about growing vegetables — it’s about growing relationships, creating sustainability, and building a stronger community one season at a time. And the vision keeps getting bigger.
Big Dreams for the Future
Emily and her team already have exciting plans in the works for the future of the property and the community.
Upcoming goals include:
A food pantry using fresh fruits and vegetables to help families in need throughout the area (by the time of this blog, this might have already started)
A future Farm & Garden Center located on the back of the property
Farm and garden products available to the community
Educational classes designed to empower local youth and equip the community with practical skills
You can truly feel that this place isn’t just a café — it’s becoming a movement centered around wellness, sustainability, and caring for neighbors.
Why We Loved It
At Snacks and Suitcases, we’re always searching for places that tell a story — businesses built with passion, purpose, and people at the center. A New Life Herbs Coffee & Café checks every box. It’s the kind of place where conversations happen naturally, where the food actually tastes fresh because it is fresh, and where you leave feeling better than when you arrived. Whether you’re road-tripping through West Tennessee, looking for a unique lunch spot, or wanting to support small businesses doing things the right way, this little café deserves a spot on your travel list.
